Position: Director of Neighborhood Engagement 

FLSA Status: Exempt

Work Hours: Full-time 

Salary Range: Approx. $85,000 - $90,000/ year


This position is open to ordained pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America. 


Position Summary 


The Director of Neighborhood Engagement oversees the church's ministries of compassion, mercy and care inside and outside the church. The Director helps gather, form, and sustain welcoming communities that engage our neighborhood in service. In addition, the Director provides pastoral advice and training for the Diaconate. This person works closely with other pastoral team members on wider church discipleship and pastoral care efforts. 


Job Description 


Expand RWS neighborhood engagement 


  • Partnerships | Under the direction and supervision of the Sr Director of Mercy and Justice, develop sustainable partnerships with local neighborhood leaders (such as non-profits, churches, and government agencies) to connect congregants to service opportunities
  • Outreach | Collaboratively plan the ministry year with mercy & justice activities, lead several related missional outreaches, and inspire missional efforts in the congregation 
  • Mobilization | Recruit, train, and support congregants to become long-term volunteers who both engage in the church’s neighborhood initiatives and learn to integrate mercy & justice into their daily lifestyle 
  • Networking | Serve as the point of contact for broad initiatives with Hope for New York and its RWS-designated affiliates 
  • Staff | Manage the neighborhood engagement support staff 


Supervision of diaconal care system 


  • Care Team | Collaborate with other pastors, directors, and the Session with pastoral care issues and on discipline cases when appropriate 
  • Diaconate | Guide the Diaconate Committee, including recruiting and training new deeks, financial oversight, and reporting on the diaconate’s effectiveness 
  • Staff | Manage the work of Diaconate Mercy Team support staff 
  • Training | Lead initial and ongoing training sessions and classes 


Pastoral leadership and development 


  • Staff | Actively participate in full staff, pastoral care team, and other staff gatherings 
  • Care | Lead a Neighborhood Care Team (NCT), which includes elders/diaconate/staff, in pastoral care efforts and community-building. Work with NCT and the counseling center on congregant pastoral care needs 
  • Discipleship | Maintain ongoing proactive discipleship and pastoral care of members 
  • Teaching |Teach/co-teach at least two discipleship classes every ministry year. Substitute in ongoing classroom teaching as needed
  • Worship | Lead Sunday worship and preach at worship services on rotation
  • Other Pastoral | Perform marriages and memorials of congregants upon request. Interview new member candidates and officer candidates. Assist regional churches with preaching periodically upon request and availability 
  • PCA | Attend and participate with WS elders at the Session. Engage the denomination (e.g., presbytery meetings, General Assembly) 


Salary: $60K-$89K

Requirements


Qualifications 


  • Aligned with the core theological principles of Redeemer West Side and the Presbyterian Church in America, including the Westminster Confession. Ordained. 
  • Undergraduate degree and a Master's Degree in ministry, theology, or a related field 
  • Previous ministry leadership and pastoral experience 
  • Strong gather ability to take the initiative to recruit volunteers 
  • Passion for and experience with leading ministries of mercy and justice and neighborhood engagement 
  • Previous experience building systems and setting programming 
  • Wisdom and discernment to advise on pastoral care and diaconate cases 
  • Able to navigate and affirm a city-positive approach to ministry in New York City
  • Must be a dependable team player and self-starter 
  • Engaging, encouraging, experienced, and wise in individual pastoral responsibilities 
  • Proven ability to navigate interpersonal relationships 
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills 
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills 
  • Work hours are generally flexible, yet must be available for some evening and weekend meetings 
  • Proficient in GSuite (Google docs, etc.) and ability to use messaging and pro 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and interface with other ministries and congregations 
  • Agreement with Redeemer West Side staff policies, including the intellectual property policy


The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill set; experience and training; licensure, certifications, and ordination; and other organizational needs.
