The candidate should be ordained, or pursuing ordination, in the Presbyterian Church in America.

While the candidate may not conceive of themselves first and foremost as a church planter, we believe these characteristics Redeemer uses to identify a church planter are appropriate for this position. Fitting with our vision of team ministry, these shared characteristics will help us identify a shared heart for ministry. The ideal candidate will reflect the following characteristics:

Gospel believing: You are repenting and believing in Jesus as a way of life; you have a growing grasp of the gospel of the kingdom in your own life and in the social fabric of urban Indianapolis. 

Emotionally intelligent: You are self-aware, able to connect with people, and handle conflict in a mature, biblical, wise way.

Communicates Scripture well: You demonstrate a capacity to understand and effectively communicate Scripture to the heart, mind, and will of those you minister to. 

Resilient: Trusting in the strength and provision of the Lord, you demonstrate a capacity to weather disappointment, discouragement, and even despair, trusting the Lord’s calling on your life and ministry.

Intellectually curious: You have a commitment to personal improvement and growth; you recognize that an effective leader never “arrives,” that there is a continual need to search the Scriptures and better understand the times in which we live.

Gathers people: You do not wait for people to come to you, whether inside or outside the church. With the heart of a shepherd, you seek to care for members of the church, you follow Jesus into hard places, you seek the lost and invite them into the life of the people of God.

Starter-builder: You look for solutions to problems and implement them. You have a vision for establishing new ministries and contributing to the growth of existing work.

Committed to the city: You have a passion for the people who are made in God’s image and for the places that he has made. You are committed to being a resident of our urban neighborhood in Indianapolis and to seek the good of our community not only through ministries of the church, but also through your time, energy, resources, and prayer.

Responsible with finances: You steward your/your family’s resources with attention to generosity, mercy, and care for those in your household. You are wise about the church’s resources, stewarding well the finances entrusted to us.

Loves church as church: You are patient and compassionate toward the church as it is today, not as you hope it will be tomorrow. You welcome messiness, brokenness, and even a little bit of chaos. You actively pray to reflect the heart of Christ for his people.
