About Athens

Athens Church didn’t begin until April 2021, but is now a growing and vibrant church north of the river in the Kansas City, Missouri metro area. The “Northland” is a 350k-person area that is one of the fastest-growing areas in Kansas City. Starting during Covid, we’ve seen steady numeric and spiritual growth among people. Beginning with 50, average attendance at Athens is currently over 225, with many young families and 20-somethings, as well as a growing number of teenage and empty nester attenders. With three full-time and several part-time staff people we have just purchased a 28,000 sq.ft. church facility with a 400-person sanctuary, gymnasium, and many classrooms. We’re excited to use it to reach more people and serve the community.

Worship Director

Athens is now at a point to invest more heavily in our worship ministry and is looking to add a staff position of Worship Director to our team. This role would lead the congregation in singing and worship in a musically rich, Biblically sound, and engaging way. We aim to incorporate the best of hymns and contemporary songs, experiencing the range of high and low energy and fast and slow pace, throughout our worship service. The person in this role would have a heavy hand in shaping the music philosophies and culture of this young and developing church. Included under their oversight would be various volunteers and volunteer teams that come together to execute a well-run worship service.

Salary: Undisclosed

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Shepherd, grow and provide leadership for an effective music ministry that is consistent with Athens’ doctrine, values, and vision.
  • Develop systems that foster a healthy, God-honoring worship ministry culture.
  • Plan and lead the weekly corporate worship service, working under the direction of, and in collaboration with, the Lead Pastor.
  • Provide direction for and work in collaboration with the Audio/Visual teams.
  • Recruit, develop, train, and encourage the music volunteer team.
  • Oversee the collaborative design of seasonal events (Christmas, Easter) and special worship services.
  • Schedule musicians and volunteers, lead regular rehearsals, and provide timely musical support and clear communication.
  • Develop current musicians and volunteers through ongoing training, feedback, mentoring, and encouragement.
  • Humbly serve where needed alongside staff and leadership.

What you bring

The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal candidate:

  • A vibrant personal relationship with Jesus and possesses general character qualities in line with the description of deacons found in 1 Timothy 3
  • Excitement for and commitment to Athens’ vision, values, and culture
  • Proficiency with Planning Center and ProPresenter preferred
  • Vocal ability and mastery of a lead instrument such as guitar or piano
  • A desire to raise up a team of musicians to use their gifts, instead of being a one-person-focused performance
  • Strives to lead worship by worshipping
  • A desire for a mixture of low church (authenticity, casual communication style) and high church (liturgies, confessions, call and response, weekly communion) elements
  • Excited to craft an overall worship service that connects with non-Christians (we say a service to them should be engaging, understandable, but slightly strange)
  • Being a teachable team player

What it’s like to live in the Northland of KC

The Kansas City metro area is just under 2.5 million across nine counties and two states, and Forbes Magazine ranked it the 7th best place in the country for young professionals to live. The “Northland” is a 350,000-person area just north of downtown and the Missouri River on the Missouri side. The church building is 10 minutes from an international airport (MCI/KCI) and 15 minutes from downtown Kansas City. We primarily draw from three counties: Clay, Platte, and Jackson, which, by nearly all estimates, are 3 of the 6 fastest-growing counties in the state of Missouri. From an evangelistic standpoint, Platte County (where the church property is located) is the least bible-believing county in the state of Missouri (nationwide, 96% of counties have more churches per person than Platte County).

It’s known as one of the best barbecue cities in the country, but the Mexican and Italian cuisine may be just as good. There are numerous parks, lakes, hiking and biking trails. The recent Super Bowl champs, a cheap MLB ticket, two professional soccer teams, one of the best performance arts centers in the country, and many artsy districts are within 25 minutes as well. You’ll love Kansas City.
