Description

Trinity Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) located in Norfolk, VA with a mission to reach people with the freedom of Christ, equip people with the truth of Christ, and send people with the love of Christ. Our church was planted in 1999 and has grown to over 450 communicant members. We are committed to being a church of Community Groups where every member is ordinarily participating in a Community Group. We’re looking for a full-time Assistant Pastor to join our team of passionate staff to help us care for and equip the members of this church for life and service in Christ’s Kingdom.

The mission of the Spiritual Formation Pastor is to equip the church for growth in maturity in Christ. This will be done primarily through Community Groups, Adult Sunday School, discipleship programs, and steady shepherding of the congregation. The Spiritual Formation Pastor will work closely with the other pastors, staff members, and lay ministry leaders to develop structures, relationships, and rhythms that form members in Christlike maturity.

This is a full-time, ordained staff role, so you will need to be an ordained minister in the PCA to apply. The Spiritual Formation Pastor works closely in a team with our other pastors and reports directly to our Executive Pastor. This role will regularly demand evening and weekend commitments; therefore, you will ordinarily only work four weekdays in the office. In the role, you will also be expected to supervise dedicated ministry staff members, attend staff meetings, and abide by the guidelines set forth in our Personnel Manual.

Requirements

This is not a role for someone who does not already have significant pastoral experience in ministry. Experienced ministers with interest in the position should be proficient in the following areas in order to thrive in this role:

Pastoral Care & Shepherding: We need a pastor who loves people and can walk with them through seasons of joy, suffering, and growth with biblical wisdom and compassion. You must be able to build trust, listen well, and counsel in such a way as to help build up individual members in faith in Christ.

Teaching & Communication: We are looking for a clear and engaging teacher of God’s Word in a variety of contexts (classrooms, small groups, and one-on-ones), with strong theological grounding in the Reformed tradition and the gospel of grace. You must also be able to track communication and be responsive across multiple channels without losing details in order to coordinate efforts between groups of volunteers and staff members.

Leadership Development & Training: Success in this position will require skill in identifying, equipping, and mentoring lay leaders to do the work of ministry. We need someone who is comfortable leading leaders, delegating ministry responsibilities, and empowering others. We also need someone who is skilled in developing and implementing training for both new and mature leaders.

Organization & Ministry Development: Competence in building and sustaining systems of care and discipleship is crucial for anyone in this role. The Spiritual Formation Pastor must execute shepherding in the church through others and that requires both relational and organizational gifts in a church of over 450 communicant members.

Collaborative Teamwork: We want someone who can share authority well with other pastors, other elders, and other staff members. Our staff team works together towards shared goals and a shared mission with humility, flexibility, and joy. Pastoring at Trinity requires one to be both humble and confident in his calling and role.
