Pastor of Discipleship Job Description

I. Primary Responsibilities:
1. Youth Ministries (50%)
§ Plan, promote, and implement all youth ministry activities. For example, weekly meetings, monthly outings, fundraisers, retreats, Bible Studies.
§ Coordinate volunteers for youth Sunday school and special programs, Cadets, GEMS, Little Lambs, etc. in conjunction with the Youth Ministries Team (YMT).
§ Engage students in events sponsored by Dynamic Youth Ministries and participate fully in the events. For example, SERVE projects are week-long summer trips where students act as God’s hands and feet and learn about their personal faith in the process.
§ Provide personal student ministries. For example, meeting students for lunch, attending sporting events, and connecting with them at life events such as graduation. Be available and approachable.
§ Communicate regularly with parents, staff, and the full church.
§ Maintain confidentiality and respect parental roles.
§ Manage the Youth Ministries budget in conjunction with the YMT and Council.
2. Congregational Life (30%)
§ Organize and participate in a subset of small groups and church activities in conjunction with the Lead Pastor. Possibly lead some of the Adult Sunday School classes.
§ Lead, organize, and coordinate our New Member Lunches/Classes. Get to know regular visitors, engage with them such that you know when they might be ready to become members, invite them to a New Members Lunch, engage with them after the lunch, and walk with them toward membership at Calvary if that is what God has called them to.
§ Engage with a subset of the congregation as a shepherd through personal ministries such as those outlined above and/or home/hospital/nursing home visits or calls, etc.
§ Assist Calvary in advancing our mission of Here, Near, and Far. Calvary wishes to build on our strengths, remain true to our core values, and try new things to attract others to a life of discipleship to Christ.
§ Preach no less than 1 in 8 sermons. At times there will be opportunities to preach more often.
§ Work with the Lead Pastor and the Worship Planning Team (WPT) to coordinate and be involved in worship leadership.
3. Leadership (10%)
§ Participate in Calvary’s Council and Consistory. Provide leadership as appropriate.
§ Church relations: Under the leadership of the Lead Pastor, represent Calvary Church at Classis Lake Superior, CRC-North America, and area churches and church plants.
§ Attend other team/committee meetings as appropriate.
4. Outreach (10%)
§ Engage with the community around Calvary. Assist Calvary members in engaging with the neighborhoods in which each of us live and work.
II. Competencies:
1. Has a demonstrated ability to engage with students in a manner that inspires them to holy living and social actions that glorify God. Ability to build community and expand God’s kingdom locally.
2. Has the communication and administration skills to lead student ministry programs.
3. Exhibits personal godliness, integrity, and a strong love for Christ; is humble and open-minded and able to maintain healthy boundaries; and has proven relationship skills to relate well and listen in a non-judgmental way.
4. Is able to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ through sermons, personal and professional behavior, and youth-oriented programs and activities.
III. Qualifications:
1. Lead a lifestyle consistent in word and practice with a personal commitment to Jesus Christ.
2. Possess a passionate call to minister to young people and their families in a professional and competent manner.
3. Ordained Minister in the CRC, RCA, or a minister in a similar denomination possessing willingness to achieve qualification in the CRC, or qualified candidate for ministry in the CRC.
IV. Reporting Structure:
1. The Pastor of Discipleship reports to the Lead Pastor for regular ministry activities. Both pastors report to the Elders for strategic direction, guidance, and spiritual oversight.

The successful candidate will be an ordained minister in the CRC, RCA,
or a minister in a similar denomination possessing willingness to achieve
qualification in the CRC. Candidates who are a qualified candidate
for ministry in the CRC or are in the process of obtaining a Master of
Divinity and are willing to seek future ordination in the CRC will also be
considered.
